What is the Medically At-Risk Driver (MARD) Centre
The MARD Centre is the first Centre in the world that offers integrated efforts targeting the discovery and development of evidence-based solutions to identify and assess medically at-risk drivers, and to provide advancements in support for those who can no longer drive.
The MARD Centre provides a forum where researchers, policy makers, and community stakeholders can work collaboratively on the implementation of policy and practices to enhance the safety and mobility of medically impaired drivers.
The MARD Centre is located at the University of Alberta, within the Department of Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
The University of Alberta has a history of conducting internationally recognized research, education, and implementation of solutions concerning medically at-risk drivers and aging-related issues, including:
- An internationally peer-reviewed continuing medical education courseware on the medically at-risk driver;
- A medically at-risk driver protocol for use in the primary care network setting;
- An in-office tool for the identification of medically at-risk driver;
- The only science-based driver evaluation, which has been taken from research to practice;
- Theoretically-based Driving Cessation Support Groups (DCSGs) for providing support for medically impaired drivers and their family members.
